Live tap-to-pay in Pakistan — a UnionPay debit card pays from an Aonax-powered phone wallet
On the morning of 22 October 2026, a Pakistani bank's UnionPay debit card, added to an NFC wallet built on Aonax technology, completed a live contactless purchase at a bank POS terminal in Lahore. The phone was simply tapped on the terminal, and the payment was approved and printed on the receipt.
What happened
- A debit card issued in Pakistan, co-badged UnionPay and PayPak, was added to the wallet on an Android phone
- The phone was tapped on a bank-acquired POS terminal in Lahore at 09:06 local time; the receipt shows an approved UnionPay debit contactless sale of PKR 1.00
- Card added in the wallet, payment made at a merchant terminal, approved by the bank — the full live flow, not a lab simulation
The real card number stays private
Look closely at the two pictures: the number on the receipt is not the number of the card in the wallet. The wallet pays with a token in place of the real card number, so the merchant and the terminal never see the actual card details. If the phone is lost, the token can be cancelled without replacing the card.
Why it matters
Phone payments only work if they fit the terminals merchants already have. This payment went through a standard bank POS terminal with no changes on the merchant side — which is what lets banks and wallet providers in Pakistan bring tap-to-pay to their cardholders quickly.
